Building an e-commerce team from scratch has been a learning experience, but the results have been transformative. Here’s how I designed a team structure that fosters success:
Identify Key Roles
When starting, it’s important to identify the core competencies needed for your business. My team had product managers, developers, marketers, and customer support—each responsible for different aspects of the digital journey.
Balance Autonomy with Collaboration
Each team member had ownership of their domain, but we also encouraged cross-functional collaboration. Marketing worked closely with product development to ensure promotions were aligned with customer preferences. It’s all about finding that balance between autonomy and teamwork.
Use OKRs to Drive Focus
We leveraged OKRs to keep everyone aligned and focused on the bigger picture. The transparency in our objectives helped everyone see how their work contributed to the overall business goals.
By organizing the team this way, we’ve been able to adapt quickly and stay competitive in a rapidly evolving market.
